Summary

Description
Beta-alanine transporter required for the uptake of beta-alanine by the glia (PubMed:28806173). Required for the recycling process of the neurotransmitter histamine in photoreceptor neurons of the compound eye and therefore for photoreceptor synaptic transmission (PubMed:28806173). Following histamine release from photoreceptors and its uptake by glia, histamine is conjugated to beta-alanine by e/Ebony to form the inactive metabolite, carcinine (PubMed:28806173).
